Never been to the Emerald City? Want to explore the city’s not-so-hidden gems? Seattle is home to countless museums, parks, and historical landmarks and while some may seem like tourist traps they capture the attention of tourists and locals alike.
The Space Needle
With 1960s vibes, panoramic views and death-defying glass floors, The Space Needle is arguably the most iconic landmark in the Pacific North West.
Tips:
Buy tickets in advance - consider buying tickets online or at the self-service kiosk found at the bast of the Space Needle.
Choose the right time - certain times of day you can avoid the intense lines like any time on weekdays or arriving shortly after it opens.
Exit through the gift shop - the SpaceBase gift shop is one of the best tchotchke shops featuring local products, Space Needle schwag, and seasonal items.
Pike Place Market
First, it’s Pike Place not Pike’s Place. Second, it was established in 1902 and one of the oldest continuously operated farmers' markets in the United States making it a stop for tourists and locals alike.
Tips:
Skip the gum wall - especially if the idea of a wall covered in chewing gum doesn't appeal to you or if you find it unsanitary.
Don’t miss the lower levels - below the flying fish of the main market level there are shops and boutiques like Golden Age Collectables, one of the oldest comic book stores in the US
Explore the cuisine - some of Seattle’s most notable restaurants are located at Pike Place like, Matt’s In the Market, The Pink Door and Shiro’s Sushi.
Gas Works Park
Gas Works Park has one of the best vantage points of the Seattle skyline making it worth the mini hike at the former gasification plant.
Tips:
Bring a picnic - if packing your own sandwich doesn’t sound appealing, visit local restaurants like Ivar’s Salmon House, Paseo Caribbean Food, or Uneeda Burger for something to-go.
Check for events - Gas Works Park is known to host concerts, festivals, community gatherings and the occasional drum circle. Check out sites like do206 to see what’s up.
